The Prime Minister of Uganda officially launched the School, planting a tree and laying the foundation stone. As a medical professional himself he is a key champion of the school.

A tangible atmosphere of hope and expectation pervaded the grounds of Mengo Hospital on Friday, as political, education and medical leaders of Uganda joined to officially launch the UCU School of Medicine. Promising to deliver medical professionals of exemplary standards, this joint venture between the Anglican church, a leading Ugandan university and the oldest hospital in Uganda is a nation-changing moment.
A total of 62 students make up the pioneer classes, comprising 35 female and 27 male students. They joined UCU on August 20th 2018 and started classes a week later. Their admission follows the Ministry of Education accreditation of UCU to teach Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery and Bachelor of Dental Surgery in February 2018. Most of the students – 53 students are doing Medicine, while 9 students are doing Dentistry.
UCU faces many challenges in maintaining this school, and yet they are grateful for the progress and support thus far. The launch raised approximately £10,000, demonstrating the commitment of local people to this cause.
UCU Partners UK plans to support the School through scholarships, provision of equipment, books and teaching support. Get in touch if you would like to help. Further details will be made available here as plans are clarified.
